Online couples therapy for sex and intimacy is a confidential, professional, and inclusive space for couples, partners, and relationship structures who want to improve intimate communication, understand differences in desire, and strengthen emotional and sexual connection.

It can support you when sexuality has become difficult to talk about, when there is distance, frustration, insecurity, or conflict, or when you want to build a more conscious, satisfying, and respectful intimate life together.

What Is Online Couples Therapy for Sex and Intimacy?

Sexuality is an important part of many relationships. Over time, however, couples and partners may experience differences in desire, challenges with intimacy, or conflict related to their sexual life.

Many people come to therapy when something feels different: desire no longer comes as easily, talking about sex feels difficult, or intimacy begins to create frustration, distance, insecurity, or resentment.

Online couples therapy for sex and intimacy offers a professional and confidential space to understand what is happening in the relationship and create new ways of connecting emotionally and sexually.

In therapy, we work with the relationship as a system, exploring the dynamic between both partners and helping you develop tools to communicate more clearly, understand your differences, and rebuild intimacy with more care.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own — therapy can help you move forward together with more clarity and care.

How We Work in Session

A structured process to understand the relationship, support both partners, and build realistic agreements

In online couples therapy for sex and intimacy, we work with the relationship as a system, while also considering the history, needs, and responsibility of each person involved. We do not look for someone to blame or take sides. At the same time, we do name and address the actions, patterns, or dynamics that may be harming the relationship.

Our process usually includes:

  1. Joint initial exploration
We begin with one or two sessions with both partners to understand the current situation, the history of the relationship, the reason for seeking therapy, how you handle conflict, and what is happening in your intimate and sexual life.

  2. Individual assessment sessions
We then usually have one or two individual sessions with each partner. These sessions help us better understand each person’s personal history, needs, fears, goals, and experience within the relationship.

  3. Feedback session
After the initial assessment, we have a feedback session where we share a clinical understanding of what may be happening in the relationship and propose a direction for therapy.

  4. Clear therapy goals
We create concrete goals using the SMART model. Each partner may have individual goals that support the relationship, and we also work on shared goals to strengthen communication, intimacy, trust, and the ability to reach agreements.

  5. Therapeutic work and agreements
Based on the goals we create together, we work with tools for communication, emotional regulation, conflict management, trust repair, relationship agreements, and exercises to strengthen emotional and sexual connection. We recognize that every relationship includes differences in desire, history, upbringing, preferences, needs, and ways of loving. The goal is not to erase those differences, but to learn how to talk about them, become more flexible, and build agreements that feel possible and respectful.

  6. Progress review
After approximately 10 sessions, we review how the process is going in relation to the initial goals. During this review, we can identify progress, adjust the therapy plan, or create new goals if other needs have emerged.

Online couples therapy for sex and intimacy does not involve nudity, physical contact, or sexual practices during the session. It is a professional and confidential space to talk about the relationship, intimacy, and sexuality with respect, clarity, and care.

When needed, we may suggest complementary individual therapy, especially in cases involving trauma, or collaborate with other health professionals. For medical concerns, we may coordinate with gynecologists, urologists, cardiologists, or other specialists; and when sexual difficulties or pain are present, pelvic floor physical therapy may also be a helpful complement to the therapeutic process.

Therapeutic Tools We May Use

Therapeutic resources to support communication, desire, intimacy, trust, and relationship agreements

In online couples therapy for sex and intimacy, we may use different therapeutic tools depending on the needs, goals, and pace of each couple, partner, or relationship structure. No tool is imposed. We choose resources collaboratively, while caring for the emotional safety of both partners and respecting the history, boundaries, and agreements of the relationship.

Gottman Method

The Gottman Method helps us understand the relationship as a system and work on core areas such as friendship, communication, conflict management, repair, trust, and shared meaning. It is especially useful for identifying patterns that strengthen or harm the relationship.

Erotic Maps

Erotic Maps help each partner better understand their desires, boundaries, fantasies, preferences, areas of comfort, and ways of experiencing pleasure. This tool supports intimate conversations through curiosity, respect, and listening, especially when talking about sexuality has become difficult.

Agreements, Jealousy, and Trust Repair

We may also use tools to review relationship agreements, boundaries, expectations, jealousy, emotional injuries, infidelity, or breaches of trust. With couples and consensually non-monogamous relationships, this may include conversations about relationship models, emotional care, sexuality with other people, hierarchy, time, transparency, and clearer, more respectful agreements.

Solid Erotic House

The Solid Erotic House, developed by Dr. Lorena Olvera, offers a progressive and structured way to explore erotic intimacy. Through this model, we work on safety, trust, desire, intimate communication, curiosity, pleasure, and the creation of a more conscious, emotionally safe, satisfying, and mutually connected sexual life together.

Brakes and Accelerators of Desire

This tool helps identify the factors that block or facilitate sexual desire in each person and within the relationship dynamic. We may explore emotional, physical, sensory, relational, contextual, and cognitive factors that influence desire before or during intimacy, helping partners better understand desire differences and build more realistic agreements.

Mindfulsex

Mindfulsex integrates presence, body awareness, and mindfulness practices applied to sexuality. It can help reduce performance pressure, decrease sexual anxiety, reconnect with body sensations, and create more conscious, slower, and more connected intimate experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Sex and Couples Therapy

Starting therapy can bring up questions—here are some of the most common ones.

1. Does online sex and couples therapy really work?

Yes. Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy. In many cases, being in your own space helps you feel more comfortable, which makes it easier to open up and engage in the process.

3. How long does therapy usually take?

It depends on your goals and your situation. Many people begin to gain clarity within the first few sessions. Some processes are more focused and shorter, while others take more time to create deeper, lasting change. In many cases, therapy unfolds over several months, depending on your level of engagement, your goals, and how much you’re able to apply what you learn between sessions.

5. Do I need to be in crisis to start therapy?

Not at all. Many people begin therapy because they want to better understand themselves, improve their relationship, or prevent issues from becoming more difficult over time.

7. How often are sessions scheduled?

Sessions typically begin on a weekly basis. As you make progress and start reaching your goals, the frequency can be adjusted to fit your needs.

2. What happens in the first session?

The first session is a space to understand what’s happening and what you need. In couples therapy, we begin with an assessment of your relationship to explore your history, dynamics, and challenges. In individual therapy, we focus on understanding your personal experience and defining clear goals for your process.

4. What if my partner doesn’t want to come to therapy?

You can start individually. Working on yourself often creates shifts in the relationship dynamic, even if your partner is not attending therapy at the beginning.

6. Is it uncomfortable to talk about sex in therapy?

It’s completely normal to feel some discomfort at first. Therapy is a space designed to be safe, respectful, and free of judgment, where you can go at your own pace.
